Art and Culture & Visual Art
Art and Culture – Grade 8 & 9
The new Art and Culture curriculum exposes learners in Grade 8 and 9 to a variety of disciplines in the Arts, including Fine Art, Drama, Dance and Music.
- Practical work forms the major part of the syllabus in the junior phase.
Pupils are given guidance on techniques through worksheets and personal demonstrations.
- Theory comprises handout notes on both History of Art as well as theoretical aspects of all 4 strands of Art.
- Learners also do research projects during the year so that they may become familiar with the process of gathering and processing their own information.
Visual Art – Grade 10, 11 & 12
If the learner elects to continue with the subject in the Senior Phase, the emphasis is now purely on the Visual Arts.
However, Parktown is unique in that it offers not only the usual disciplines of art
e.g. Painting, sculpture, photography etc. but also a specialization in Industrial Design, a good platform for anyone wishing to go into Engineering, Architecture or even Industrial Design as a career.
The other aspect of Visual Art is called Visual Culture Studies.
Although it is similar to what was previously referred to as History of Art, the emphasis is now much more on relating art to a social, historical and cultural context.
